5 Best Benefits Of Working Online

working online

How many times have you wished you could work online at the leisure of anywhere you’d like and be your own boss? Sounds tempting doesn’t it. The reality is you DO have the ability to transition to working and running your business from the comfort of your home or anywhere in the world.

Take a step back for a moment and imagine your ideal work environment. It could be anywhere in the world or right there in your home – this isn’t the pipe dream of yesterday, it’s happening all over the world NOW.

In fact, you may not have realized there are so many additional benefits to working online.

Here are the 5 best benefits of working online:

  1. Be Your Own Boss. Unless you love your job dearly, we all get to the point where we’re fed up with our boss. How many times have you been asked to complete a task that feels like the dredge of your life? Not anymore. By working online you get to be your own boss, make your own decisions and take your business to any end you see fit.
  2. No More Commute To Work. The average worker in the United States spends nearly 1 hour on the road each day. Take this number and multiply it by the days you’ll work each year and you’re losing DAYS off your life just to drive to work. Not anymore. Working online frees you from the daily commute so you can use it to sleep in, spend more time with your family, have more time for work or use it for your own leisure.
  3. Set Your Own Hours. The 9 to 5 is a rigid system that has been distilled in many countries – why? It’s a fact that we don’t all work well on the same time frame. Some of us work better at night, some later in the after noon. Working online allows you to set your own hours to work – you could be finishing a project at 3am or just starting at 1 in the afternoon.
  4. Work Anywhere In The World. By far the greatest benefit of working online is the ability to work anywhere in the world. With a stable connection, you can have instant access to your work via the internet. Programs such as GoToMyPC or LogMeIn allows you to access your computer anywhere in the world – now you’re really free!
  5. Do What You Love. Passionate people create remarkable businesses. If you’re working for another person you never seem to find the time to work on your own dreams. Working online gives you this freedom to do what you love with the skills you enjoy using. Thousands of companies are looking for people with your skill set and they’re only a click away.

What Are You Waiting For?

Each day that passes by you loose another opportunity to break free from the endless cycle of working for others. I’m not going to push you to quit your job today; hell, you may love your job but do consider that possibilities of being your own boss, setting your own time and work anywhere in the world – you can’t pass this up.

Get started now. Visit websites like Freelancer.com, oDesk, Monster and Craigslist to start searching for online jobs. Utilize your skill set and don’t waste another day working for someone else.

Good luck

      Thanks Dev.

I think people really underestimate their potential when it comes to working online. If you factor in your car payment, commute, lunch during work and all the little things you spend while working at a business, you really add up a lot of bills that could be cut out by working from online at home or on the road.

You can now focus your efforts to the core bills and still have a lot left over.

(Maybe we’ll see how it works out in the near future :P )

You said it right, we and our boss always underestimate. Being our own boss we can input ful of our capabilitis. And internet makes it more easy :)

Keeping an entrepreneurial mind really opens up the idea and possibility of doing so.

The problem with modern work is how structured it’s become to make you into a drone. You never really have the time to work on your own projects because you’re always at work; you can’t peruse these goals without the risk of losing your job.

It’s one of those things where you have to say ‘go for it’ – become your own boss and control your destiny, ya know?

    Murlu !
It is indeed very tempting. The whole idea of running a business from the comfort of our own home or anywhere in the world is the driving force for me as well as other bloggers.

You have presented very nice set of benefits of working online. I am glad you pointed out that people are loosing days off their lives by having to drive for hours to get to work and back.

    Thanks buddy for great insights.

Thanks Adam, the little things that are overlooked really add up.

When you think about it, 1/3 of your life is spent sleeping, 1/3 is working and the other is spent for yourself. So no you’re cutting out time from your ‘personal’ time to commute and run errands which relate to work.

I think it would be so much better if you didn’t have to do these things by working on your own projects. No more commuting, no more extra hours – the only work you do is for the business you’re passionate about: yours.

You don’t have to convince me to work from home, I’ve been doing it for almost 7 years :) My husband helped me realize I’d be much happier working for myself, and I can’t thank him enough. I could never find a boss who really valued my skills.

About working anywhere in the world, I know someone who told his boss he was moving to Rome, whether he liked it or not. The boss agreed he could telecommute and he’s still working there years later.

      I’m jealous Jennifer hehe

It’s great to have a support system such as the one you have; sometimes we need that little push to realize our goals.

I’d love to hear what you’ve learned from your experience, how you handle business (even around family life) or some of the opportunities that have risen.

  5. June 4, 2010 at 9:01 pm #

Thanks Murray, I’m very lucky :) He’s really helped me keep at my business even when the world seemed indifferent. I get impatient for results!

Things I’ve learned off the top of my head are:

    1. Everything takes longer than you think it will.
    2. The switch from a little attention from customers to a lot can happen quickly and you never know when.
    3. Figure out who your best customers are and be extra nice to them.
    4. A satisfied customer is the best form of advertising.
    5. Some customers will never be satisfied, so don’t let a few complainers suck up all your time.
    6. Set clear policies and be consistent.
    7. Figure out where your limits are and don’t let customers push past them (for example, work hours, pricing, how you run promotions)
    8. Keep an eye on your profitability so you don’t spend a lot of effort but make little money.

      Hey Jennifer,

Thanks for responding to the comments, your husband sounds very wise because each of these sound like the perfect approach to building a strong business.

      I especially like #4 and #8.

#4 is spot on because businesses that go above and beyond become something people constantly talk about. Think of a time when an employee went out of their way to help you beyond what you ever expect. You always end up telling someone which then sends them to check out the business.

#8 is great too because its easy to feel like the more hours you work, the more you must be earning but it’s actually quite opposite sometimes. Longer hours doesn’t necessarily mean more revenue.

      To your success!

Hi Murray, you are right about excellent service. I went to my local Radio Shack the other day to pick up some batteries. The manager never met me before, but he personally helped me and hooked me up with a $10 coupon for next time. I immediately told my husband … and then your website. :)

For #8, looking at your current profit and loss statement can be eye opening. If you are working your butt off but not making much money, that can let you know to make an immediate course correction – charging more, spending less, cutting out wasted effort, etc.

That’s fantastic Jennifer – you see how powerful word-of-mouth is? It’s a shame so many businesses don’t utilize this tactic more often, it’s the most powerful! You have to think of how that manager just setup a potential future sale. Next time you need something, you’re going to remember that coupon and head right on over.

I really like the idea of the 80/20 rule which is why #8 should be something we all keep track of. I realized one time that I was writing articles for a client – it was a ton of articles but after the time I invested, it didn’t equate to what I was hoping for. Sometimes not all clients and work is worth it if you’re losing in the end. Like you said, you have to stay up on these things else you’re going to be burned in the long run.

I enjoy working online because it give so many things which are not available in offline world. In online world we can show our talent without investing more.

Hi Murlu, I am absolutely going to make sure my husband goes there for his newest project.

Actually, the 80/20 rule also applies to #5. It’s important not to let the customers giving you 20% of your profits take up 80% of your time, while giving little attention to the big customers who are easy to deal with. You don’t want them going to your competitors because you take them for granted!

      @Jennifer

Right on point Jennifer. At my day job, our tech support will be on the phone sometimes for 1 – 2 hours at a time! After they get off the phone, I ask what it was about (I admit, I’m a little nosy) and to my surprise it dealt with handling a small problem for a $30. Factor in the time it took away from tech support working on other things, it really doesn’t add up.

It’s crucial to make each customer happy and strive for repeat business but you do have to learn when to break ties. If tech support used 2 hours to talk to one of our best customers, I bet they would have easily ordered a huge package and helped solidify their repeat business.

Thanks for bringing up the subject Jennifer – we’re all learning a little more :)

@Murray: Exactly, I’m all for helping customers but if one customer is consistently taking attention away from your regulars without spending much money, it’s time to re-evaluate the relationship.
