Blog and Income Report: March 2011

It’s the return of the Blog and Income report! Whaaaa? Every since leaving my day job to do this whole ‘online thing’ I found it very important that I pay close attention to my online earnings because, after all, I was now on my own. So, I’ve decided to bring back these reports since they’ll not only show how Murlu is doing but let you keep up with the progress of my online business ventures and goal to reach $3,000 a month in online earnings by the end of this year.

Let’s look at some numbers eh!

Murlu Traffic Report: March 2011

Murlu seems to continue to climb just a bit more and more each month. I thoroughly believe that I could reach the 25,000 visitor mark by the end of the year but the overall challenge is that I don’t believe in massively posting every week, I tend to avoid optimizing my content for search engines and I try to focus on topics that aren’t getting the normal ‘rounds’. Sure, I could create a ton of posts about blogging, Twitter, Facebook blah blah blah but it would be too easy; that’s why I want to stick with the niche topics that go beyond the basics of blogging (maybe this will be my downfall haha).

Blog Traffic for March 201

The spike you see there was for a StumbleUpon paid advertising test. I dumped $10 into the platform just to see how it performed. It sucked. All it really did was raise my bounce rate and lowered my time on site.

Besides that, traffic on Murlu tends to be rather stable even for the overall lack of weekly posts. I stray from overloading everyone with new information because there’s simply too much overload which is why there’s maybe one to two posts a week.

Anyway, traffic will continue to grow as it always does; here I come 25,000.

Murlu Income Report: March 2011

What an exciting month. Around the half way point I left my job to pursue and online career in business. I’ve begun to develop great relationships with potential clients that may pan out to be monumental sources of revenue. Additionally, I managed to launch a venture, PLRArticlesNow.com, by the end of February but March saw quite an expansion into the overall value delivered through the site. Let’s break down some of the numbers:

Clickbank: $574.18

Clickbank Earnings March 2011

Clickbank is beginning to become my new best friend. I attribute a large increase in Clickbank earnings to the email list I’ve created along with going back to create nearly 60+ emails for the thing to constantly deliver value. Overall, I probably do less than 20 minutes of work in terms of promoting Clickbank products; everything is pretty much automatic at this time between email lists and blogging.

Note: The large majority of my Clickbank earnings come from my other blogs. This is the basis of why I’m now talking about Business Beyond Blogging. It’s the blogs we create in other niche markets that isn’t just Internet Marketing, Blogging about Blogging and blah blah blah that have a ton of potential.

Amazon Associates: $169.42

Amazon Associates March 2011 Earnings

I wish Amazon Associates updated on a regular basis but things to be a bit off the wall sometimes. I think, in reality, my March earnings are around $210 because the last group of items was a wide variety of high purchase items (books, Wii, video games). Ah well, it’ll probably show up on the next report.

PLRArticlesNow: $90.65

PLRArticlesNow March 2011 Earnings

A new addition to the income report is my latest business: PLRArticlesNow.com. On this site, I offer PLR articles that help webmasters save time on the time required to develop content for their websites and online projects. I’ve seen a few sales since officially launching which is nice; I’m still working on promoting the business and expanding its value. One thing I did in March is introduce a blog and eCourse for the list that shares how to get the most out of the each article: check out the course here.

Google Adsense: $32.11

Google Adsense Earnings for March 2011

Nothing too special to see with Adsense; I actually took it back down from one of my main blogs to test out CPA offers but they haven’t been running long enough to make a firm decision on whether or not to go with either of the two. One thing I did notice, at least for the main blog I had Adsense on, is that people tended to click image based ads vs. text. The niche is tech savvy so people immediately knew what Adsense was where as the images was a bit more enticing overall.

Freelance Writing & Misc. Income: $112.58

Freelance and Misc Earnings for March 2011

Freelance writing, for me, always has a positive return. It’s unfortunate that I wasn’t able to complete my current writing gig in time for March otherwise there would be an additional $250 but that’ll be for next month. I don’t do much writing for sites like Helium and marketplaces anymore; I now hold a larger favor toward client work because it gives me the opportunity to make subtle up sells for PLRArticlesNow, sneaky sneaky haha.

I also landed a few misc. items of income from hosting affiliate payouts and a few marketplace sales.

Blog and Income Wrap Up

For the first official month of being on my own (over the last two weeks) I’ve managed to do fairly well. I have a few clients lined up for work that should be very interesting to see how they pan out. My business site, PLRArticlesNow, continues to climb in search engines. Murlu is taking a steady rise and the overall interest in the Business Beyond Blogging series seems to be well received. Finally, I do plan to go back into my other projects to work on the items that have shown a return to maximize their own earnings – all in due time.

Total Earned in March 2011: $978.94

I’m happy with my overall earnings for March; things will continue to grow now that I have my entire day to focus on online projects. It’s not quite the $1,500 I was earning around the holiday times but there were a few sources that I wasn’t able to claim because I need to do the final completion of the projects.

My Top Resources for March 2011

Over the month of March, there have been a few resources that I’ve discovered that have greatly help me build up my online income. I’d like to share a few of them here. These are a mix of products, posts and misc. tech geekiness that I found amusing/helpful.

  • The Smart Business Guide to Winning New Work – Pawel of SelfEmployedCafe has truly outdone himself with this book; it’s one of the best resources I’ve read on landing clients and customers at your business. It’s such a breath of fresh air to see someone talking about the real side of business rather than just Internet Marketing. If you have a business than you should definitely read this. Also, today only, there’s a 30% discount on the book so snag it up!
  • Deadbeat Super Affiliate – Amazon Associates has been one of my favorite types of online earnings especially around the holiday season. I’ve been meaning to do a full review of Deadbeat Super Affiliate for some time now but what I’d mention now is that it’s one of the main reasons why my Associates earnings are doing well. In the holiday seasons I was rockin’ nearly $400 a month alone. This course isn’t expensive and will give you a great foundation for getting started with Amazon.
  • Connectify – Connectify is an awesome piece of software I found just recently that lets me hook up my laptop as a wireless hub. We use it at the apartment to send wireless to the PS3 and avoid having to pay $50 for a wireless router, boss!
  • How to Build an Autoresponder Sequence – If there would be one post I’d recommend to everyone that was published in March it would be Steve Scott’s guide to creating a killer autoresponder sequence. Seriously, this post is better than nearly everything I’ve read about building an email list (and I mean it).

You probably that I have a stance on “just in time learning”; I try to only dig into information now if it directly relates to the projects and ventures I’m working on. For this reason, I’ve been a bit vacant in a lot of participation on blogs because I’ve been busy setting up the foundation for my work. However, these resources were the ones that stood out for me in March 2011.

Personal Developments

In case you wanted to know some of the personal items I have going on my life, I’ve got a few things to share:

  • Japan & Thailand Trip – On Tuesday (April 5th) my friend and I are heading out for a 2 month trip across Japan and Thailand. To be blunt: I don’t think we’re anywhere near prepared how most people would do it. We have our backpacks, general idea where we’re going and tickets in hand. We’re going to be roughing it; it’ll put ourselves to the true test. We made this decision to travel extremely rough because it will naturally force us into situations that will be extremely rewarding such as needing to barter work for food, stay up all night to save on hotel costs, sleeping on the beach and so forth. I plan to launch a small travel blog to document the trip (and future ones) called OffTheBeatenPack.com.
  • Learning to let go – The first week of being on my own was crazy for productivity but I’ve made the effort to scale back a bit because, after all, the point of all this online work isn’t to make enough job but to create income streams that don’t require my presence to constantly keep them in check. I’m a workaholic; I’m learning to relax which is a very strange feeling.
  • Having fun – Along side of learning to let go, I’ve been a bit more active on strictly passionate projects and just having fun. I took a trip with my girlfriend to go to Mardi Gras which was really awesome. I’ve been helping my brother establish his own online business which has been fun since we can work on a common project. Spending more time with friends, playing Diablo 2, geeking out with some tech projects, etc. All in all, just been having a lot of fun.
  • One final thing: I want to thank everyone for their wonderful support. Everyone that has sent me an email, chatted with me on Skype, left a comment on the blog, shared my content on social networks, began following me on RSS/Twitter/Facebook. You’re all amazing people; I’m truly grateful for the privilege that you give me to share information (and sometimes rant). I’ll keep doing my best to deliver the goods here if you keep reading and sharing. Thanks all!

A little somethin’ somethin’ before you head out…

Great stats and a good income for a one month old full time blogger. I am yet to concentrate on Clickbank, but one day I will do it in the way you are doing right now. Way to go Murray.

These earnings have taken years to get to which I don’t think a lot of people realize; it really has been work. But, overall, it shows that if you keep up with it and build the momentum you can start the effect to earn from your ventures. Unfortunately, Clickbank does have a lot of crap products but there are always those gems in there that can be very profitable for your list :)

      Best of luck man!

I’m glad to see you saying that this has taken work.. long hard work to get to.

All things take time and I can honestly say that if I didn’t stick past the 2 year mark than none of this would have happen. Other people have been able to do this much easier but I’m just glad that I’m now hitting that tipping point. It’s like anything – if you put work into it than you’re going to get real rewards. Now it just comes down to repeating what has worked over and over again until I hit my goal :)

Not too bad overall. I much rather work all day on my own business ventures to earn 1/2 the money than to work for someone else and only make a bit more. Tons of opportunity to expand and be recognize for work rather than being behind the scenes at a company :)

You’re doing great – I have miles to go yet, with online earnings. At first I was curious as to why your total includes everything, then realised you’re reporting on your total income, and not just your passive income online earnings. I’m always telling people to read everything carefully, so that was a slip up of mine!

Keep up the good work – you’re right, people don’t realise that, at least initially, making money online is hard work.

Enjoy your trip to Japan and Thailand.

      Thanks Teresa :)

The majority of online income, overall is passive (such as Clickbank and Amazon Associates) because the main blogs I run them on have been setup to have a massive email list response sequence and have enough traffic to get the clicks on Amazon.

The other stuff though is what I’m interested in. I love working with clients and others in my network because it opens up a ton of opportunities to go beyond the blog through partnerships and being able to share information.

The real power, as I’ve noticed, really does come down to your connections. Hell, just today I had a follow up call with a potential (whale) of a client that was referred to me through my high school friend :D Tap all those individuals because there’s always work out there; you just need to find it.

      Best of luck!

  7. April 1, 2011 at 1:57 pm #

    Murray, this is awesome!

You’re definitely pretty far along on your path. Once you start making money regularly its only a matter of building upon it. And you’ve got A LOT to build upon to accomplish the multi-media empire you’re out to achieve :)

By the way, your “general idea” of where you want to go in Asia is the best way to go! That’s what I did in Europe and it worked out amazingly. When you go on a trip like this things come up and plans change, this approach gives you the flexibility to alter your plans on the fly.

And sleeping on the beach definitely sounds better than sleeping in a train station (like I had to do once).

Can’t wait to see the travel blog.

The momentum is the hardest part of it all Eugene, as you’ve probably seen. We’re rockin’ it but it’s not time to slack off now; gotta keep pushing forward else that rock starts to roll back into place. This increased flexibility in time is going to do wonders in the long run. I think I’ll be able to try out a lot of experiments that will make for some great content here on Murlu which everyone can use to bypass the huge time invested.

I’m almost frightened about the trip at this point but that’s just the pre show jitters. I know that once I’m over there I’ll be able to start adjusting, it’ll be a true culture shock that I’m totally ready for. I think the blog, in a lot of ways, will keep me from going insane sometimes too haha. I’m sure it’ll make for a great amount of content because we are doing it on such a low budget; it’ll be a travel blog about a raw experience rather than just sitting on the beach with a laptop in hand :)

With your work ethic not suprised that it’s working out for you. Enjoy the travel. I sure did when I travelled through Europe….a long time ago when I was young ;-)

In those days could do Europe on $10 a day. The Brits could do it on $5 LOL

I try to portray a real example of what can be done with this whole online thing. It’s definitely not push button profits like a lot of people want to make you believe; it’s a lot of work. Having these income reports (back on again) will help me stay focused and keep up with what I need to do along with a bit of reinforcement to show what’s working. I plan to reinvest back into my ventures as things get a bit more stable and I have no doubt that by the end of the year I’ll be hitting the 3k mark :)

That’s awesome, Murray. I like seeing people get results, but then I hate comparing myself to them afterwards. My traffic is a 1/3 of yours, but we’re writing for two different audiences. The only thing I can brag about is that my conversion rate on Amazon is higher than yours (4%).

I’m planning on buying Pawel’s book in preparation for the future months when I need to seek out some more clients as my current work load drops. Any plans to do a major review of it?

Hope you keep rocking it in the future months!

Man, I’d love to have 4% of my clicks haha, I’m jealous :D

Pawel’s book was quite an eye opener and such a great work because it broke from the normal route of “here’s how you make money online” it goes into the foundation of real sales rather than slamming a site with traffic and hoping for the best.

I do plan to do a full review in due time. Pawel has a lot of additional items in the book such as templates that I want to put into effect so I can add additional value to the review by showing results that I’ve got from doing the steps in the book. Add an extra layer to the review, ya know? Until then, it’s definitely my favorite work thus far that has already helped me tremendously. I kept a few of the points in mind with a recent set of calls I had with a very large company that was looking for content marketing strategies; I made sure to keep things focus, get that valuable follow up chat and ask the power questions. I can’t say yet whether I’ve landed the client (having a call on Monday) but this could be HUGE; I attribute a lot of it from some of the items I was able to use from the book when talking to them.

Anyway, thanks for all the support James. Keep rockin’ it!

    Murray,

Thanks for the link love and of course even more for the kind words. I am glad you got some good use out of the article! Hopefully the next two weeks should have some really good Monday posts for ya too. I just finished both of them up as I am also headed out on vacation. (Flying to Belize/Guatamala for 10 days with my girlfriend)

Anyhow…it is nice to see your number look strong. Particularly since only “part” of this month was really “full” time internet work. I think you will easily make your 3k in a couple of months. If not sooner.

Gosh your trip sounds like it will be fun. And scary. Be careful not to end up in a Thai Prison. I have seen a couple of those movies scary stuff. Also my brother spent some time in Japan while in the Navy, one thing he often told me about was how crazy expensive everything was there…just as a heads up.

ON the flip side Thailand sounds like a great place to go and hang for months on the cheap. I look forward to hearing more of your adventures. make sure to at least provide a link to your travel-logue I would like to check up on that every so often and see your, “adventures”

Thanks for the awesome words Steve.

Dang, your trip sounds all kinds of awesome. Belize and Guatemala sound like a real treat; be sure to let us know, as well, how things go such as cost of living and doing work on the road because I definitely want to incorporate a lot more travel in my future (as I assume many of us do as well).

It’s been amazing what that “part” of the month has done so far. It’s only been, officially, two weeks since leaving and I’ve landed freelance writing gigs, awaiting a MAJOR decision from a potential client, working on a design for a BIG project you’ll hear about from many bloggers and getting a lot of things in place that will definitely have a substantial impact in the long run.

I tend to keep my trip “rules” down to the bare minimum (almost commically). For example, while in New Orleans my main “rule” of travel was to not get hit by a trolley haha. My main “rule” in Thailand is to not have my feet caned. I think we’ll be fine for the most part; we’ll just blend in with the rest of the dirty European backpackers haha.

I think I’ll be setting up the blog tonight, actually, so that we can have a few “pre trip” posts that will outline some of the adventure and what all we’re taking. Should be really fun to have this to document rather than basically dumping pictures into one place; it’ll also let family know what we’ve been up to because I can’t begin to say how many times my mom has been ‘oh my God! you can’t be doing that, noooo!’ and ‘it’s okay mum, we’ll be fine’ haha.

Anyway, maybe one of our world adventures will cross paths at time :P . Keep at it man, really looking forward to what you’ve got in store for us in the next posts. Also, I don’t even care if you’ve got 100 pages of blank content, I’m still buying your book when you launch it.

    Hello Murray,

At least you are increasing your earnings and you have your sources of incomes spread over a couple of networks and income types. Something that I really like and hope to achieve in the near future.

Also, your business with plr has started pretty well, to have 90$ worth of sales in the first month after the launch is pretty good and I am sure it can only increase from now one and it’s a lasting business, because there will always be the need for article. By the way, do you offer some custom writting services on your PLR website? You could sell plr and also have an option for a unique article and stuff, of course for a bigger price, you never know when someone will choose the option.

That’s one of the big items that made me make this shift on the blog, Alex. It isn’t just about making income from one source but tapping into your ability to create assets and creating MULTIPLE sources so if one fails you still can keep going right along.

I do have plans to eventually get personal writing services up on the PLR site in due time. I’d like to get a stable base of customers for the normal products first just because I don’t want to go too far off on my mission and vision for the business. I think, once I build that base, I’ll be able to see what people want and then approach individuals for private services. Should be very interesting. Got a lot of plans; just gotta take them one step at a time. The site is climbing in search engine rankings which I think I’ll be able to capture very shortly; I do want to directly contact people as well because there is a lot of value in PLR for their projects.

Anyway, thanks for the support and catchya around :)

Awesome stuff, Murray. Just about cracking that $1,000 mark, and I have no doubt you’ll soar well beyond that point very soon.

I’ve had similar luck with paid StumbleUpon traffic that I tried for one of my image-based niche sites (that I no longer have). The traffic was worthless – none of it converted in any way. StumbleUpon is probably best for organic traffic – not because that traffic is any better, but because it doesn’t cost you anything. :P

I’m excited to read these monthly income reports going forward, especially because you’re no longer held down by the 9 to 5. Keep it up man.

I forgot to calculate the Godaddy affiliate earnings in there d’oh! Otherwise I would have tipped past the $1k mark haha. Ah well, I’ll remember it for next month. We’re two days in and things have already started to pick up. Sometimes it can be difficult to get right into it because I’m not being “forced” to drive in and stay around an office but once things start up there’s no stopping me. I love being able to get up, walk around, stop to watch a show or do whatever because it’s a much needed break from all the work.

SU is awesome but I don’t think I’ll be doing any further testing with paid. It was mostly because people in Skype asked if anyone has tried it so I went ahead and did it again just to show the results – sharing with the community, $10 to help 5 other people avoid spending $50 haha.

Thanks for the support man. I have no doubt that things will continue to climb and would love to work with you on something in the near future whether that’s just a simple guest post here or on your blog or something even bigger (hint hint, I’ve been further exploring and idea of a podcast).

I don’t do Helium as much anymore since they changed up how payments work but it’s still viable. I would suggest going out to niche blogs and seeing if they need posts as well; plenty of opportunity out there to put your writing to work :D

    Hey Murlu,

You make a lot with affilate sales, but its great you have many different income streams. It could turn out bad if you only have one and something goes wrong. Keep working hard and developing for the better and your income is only bound to grow!

    Good luck!

    God bless,

      That’s the plan William.

Have a nice variety of income sources that I can earn from and use them for testing grounds for the others. I think, in the future, I’ll probably take some of the items from my other blogs and begin implementing them into various niche websites I own. It’s all really cool stuff; cheers for the support!

    Remarkable feat Murray; congratulation!

It is always interesting to see your stats and income. You put in a lot of hard work to get to this point – The best thing about you is that you don’t hold anything back; you say as it is!

Enjoy your travel brother! hope to read about your experience in Asia.

Nothing to hold me back :)

I almost feel, at times, that I should just create as much content as possible because I have a TON of information that I’d like to share but I have to remember that everything needs time and I don’t want to overload you guys haha.

I need an appropriate outlet for my work so I think I’ll be doing a lot more guest posting from here on out while I’m in this series here on Murlu.

Anyway, I’m just rambling. Thanks for the support Adam. I’m sure I’ll be seeing your resignation from your work sometime soon :)

    Murray,

Great to see these figures. How do you work the PLR Articles thing? Do you buy them and sell them on or do you get an affiliate cut for each one sold?

Keep up the fantastic work mate!

Murray – I can just think that how much you must have struggled to make all things rolling for you . I am making good money from adsense but always keep thinking to enter affiliate market also . I am happy that you have displayed real stats and told users how long it took for you…

Murray – great job in publishing this information. I’m hoping to monetize my blog with Amazon, with the intention of slowly building an authority site. Coupled with my writing and stuff (like you’re doing) I should be able to reach a respectable level. Well done and good luck for the future!

Murray, it is great to see that you are one step closer to your goal, congratulations. It is obvious that you are on the right track and you will see bigger success soon if you keep working on what you are doing good.

Also, one important point is that you have more than one source of income and this is what all internet marketers should be doing.

Great report and looks like you are doing well for yourself, won’t be long until you reach your targets!

These kind of reports make me realise I need to start trying new methods to earn a bit of extra money form my websites. I only really do them as a bit of fun at the moment, although I am trying to make money, I tend to neglect that side and focus on just getting articles up and making new websites. I have only added adsense to all of my websites as of yet, well they’ve been up for about a year ha, need to sort that out. I also have Amazon on a couple of domains, but it’s pretty much hidden and I haven’t made it so people use it, they are just kind of there.

Anyway, there are always bit and bobs to do and over the next month I plan on doing them, I’ll be up there with you making that kind of money soon :)

      Thanks for swinging by Simon.

I wouldn’t worry a lot about whether everything will take off right away. I too took a while before ever monetizing the sites I have but because I took my time I was able to see what people wanted so I made sure to give it to them. That’s one of the benefits of patience online. Should be interesting to hear how things will go for you once things start to pan out as far as your thoughts on trying different things. I would say not to stretch yourself too thin though; work on one or two things at one time for a couple months before trying out the next thing. Then, go back and see what worked. Apply that to the future :)

I plan to cheers :) . It’s where I have faulted in the pass, taking too much on at once and then not being able to maintain them all. One thing at a time now, some of my websites cna wait just a bit longer to be updated.
