Seven Golden Tips to know before Setting up a Blog

This is a guest post from Daniel Pintilie, a freelance writer working for for Go-Globe.com, and one of the first guest posts here on Murlu.com – I hope you enjoy it!

The Internet medium started to develop two decades ago, almost unnoticed and nowadays is it an entity which is present worldwide and many children can’t believe that some years ago there was no Internet and people managed through without its facilities.

Today, when you cannot find a piece of information, what do you do? Simple, you write a few words in the search box of a search engine to describe what you want and most probably you will land on a blog. Voila, another “www” concept that makes our life easier and nicer.

I am an Internet addict, therefore my subjectivity might play a big role, but I consider that it has really re-written the modality of living, everything is faster and of better quality.

A few days ago, I read that even the blogs produced a semi-revolution in our society and guess what, I read it on a blog! The blogosphere, the totality of blogs launched, evolved and the statistics revealed that the Internet is almost saturated with these. Launching a new blog is a challenge, but there are two situations:

  • It is just for fun, it’s a modality to share some interesting thoughts and adventures with your friends
  • The blog is considered a business and the endeavors of the owner are serious.

I write this post for the second situation because, for the first category, things are simple and any post about this subject is a waste of time and energy.

The blogosphere is full of online presences, some of them offering quality posts, some decent ones, but overall there is room for other more and more interesting blogs. Someone who is an expert in a field and eager to show other people his skills and expertise considers a blog the perfect situation but, in order to be successful, there are a lot of unexpected difficulties that will have to be handled.

From my experience and by reading other bloggers advice, I made up a small guide of seven golden tips to know before setting up a blog.

Don’t ignore it because apparently it is insignificant, this is only the essence; I expect that the readers share their interesting ideas about what should someone do before launching his blog, the comment form is for you, so use it!

1. The effects can’t be visible in few days

This is the first tip and personally, I consider it being the most important: there cannot be quick positive results, a long time vision and a strict discipline are needed, or else I don’t think that someone can be successful.

First of all, until the crawlers of the search engines and the people will observe your work, a considerable period of time will pass. Second, as I said to you, the blogosphere is appreciable as both number and quality, hence it’s unbelievably difficult to find a reliable and impressionable number of readers.

You shouldn’t worry, all the great blogs started from zero, these have grown fantastically mostly because of the passion of the man behind them.

2. There is a lot of work

Before delving deeper into any blogging activities, I used to believe that I am very active; however, a few months after practicing it, I drastically change my mind, I was very lazy. Even though for those who are inexperienced, it seems a nice job, with almost nothing to do, the reality is different: there is an IMMENSE volume of work. My humble advice is simple: before launching a blog, read more posts about blogging, I may be wrong but tens, if not hundreds of bloggers would state the same, that the work invested is unimaginable.

On the other hand, nothing can be compared to the satisfaction of being appreciated by the community; you can become addicted to this.

3. Many people ignore it but SEO is vital

Definitely, offering quality posts and interesting tips is very important for the Internet users but there is another aspect that is neglected by most amateur bloggers: the optimization for the search engines. People use these amazing adjutants (search engines) very much and the traffic received directly from them represents a very important percentage.

If you really want to create an important blog, then a SEO specialist must be hired (definitely, if the owner of the blog knows how to impress the crawlers is OK).

4. Find a good niche

In the beginning, all the new bloggers are decided to make their work the best in the niche but after a few months, the immense majority gives up and simply consider that blogging doesn’t deserve their efforts. This happens because few have the patience to wait a longer period of time to see the results and the topics treated are discussed too much by other bloggers and the competition scares them.

In order to avoid the competition with big blogs, it is highly recommended to find an unexploited field, definitely there aren’t any domains that are 100% unexploited, but are some domains where the competition isn’t at the highest standards.

5. The monetization must be regarded as a reward and not something mandatory

Another common mistake is to start the monetization of the blog after the first post is published. The monetization of the blog is a difficult choice; there must be an equilibrated balance between the banners inserted and the possibility to read the content undisturbed.

It’s not a shame to want money from your work, but it must be done properly, the avarice is punished by visitors.

As a personal consideration, it’s a sign of amateurism to have few posts and many banners, the apparition of these should be conditioned by the quantity and quality of the articles.

6. Prepare your resources very well and organize your schedule accordingly

This tip is useful when somebody really got to the point of being ready to launch his blog; being an organized person is mandatory in this trade. Having a clear schedule, knowing where your resources are, makes the handling of the blog easier and more importantly, a lot of time is saved. Depending on your posting scheme, it is for the best to ensure a good reserve before publishing the first post.

7. For a yearlong say good bye to your personal life!

It may seem a little unserious tip, but it is the reality of many bloggers. It’s impossible not to neglect your personal life for professional blogging; there are so many sides of this activity that even 25 hours of work per day isn’t enough. If you aren’t still convinced, search for some online interviews of the best bloggers and clearly, the main idea is the same.

In spite of all these, I continue to enjoy blogging and once again, I must warn you that it can become addictive, hence pay attention to it.

    Danielle,

Great tips for stating a blog. One thing people do not understand is that this is a deep commitment. It is not something you can just “sometimes post to when you feel like it” At least not if you want it to be a success.

I also liked your tip #5. I went a year without taking any “real” attempt at monetizing my blog. And even now I don’t have any “direct” monetization like adsense or banners.

Now depending on “what” the site is, adsense or banners -might- be the right way to go. But the moment I see a brand new blog that is festooned with ads and ways to make money I know 100% that it will never succeed.

It is fine to want to make money from your blog, but that should never be the sole purpose of what you do.

    Great post Danielle!

I really enjoyed these tips, certainly refreshing and not your run of the mill tips (read: Have a presence on social media yaddayada ya…)
I especially agree with #3, 5 and I especially enjoyed 7, made me smile.

    Hey Daniel,

Great post here! These are very good tips you’ve shared. You are very right when you’ve mentioned that it will take a while and a lot of work for our blog to actually start doing good with us doing less work. This is my first year blogging and these tips really helps out a lot. I was not aware of some of them. Thanks for posting and sharing this! Keep it up! :D

Number #3 was HUGE for my site!

I ignored it for like two years, was pretty invisible SEO wise and finally my business partner hunkered down and it ended up taking around a month to get the site reorganized (siloed), tagged, etc. so that we start ranking for some key words.

And the thing is, it only takes an extra, maybe 20 minutes, a post to add a few elements into your posts to make sure you’re giving google and everyone else what they need in order to be able to see you.

One of the best courses I’ve ever come across on the topic of de-tangling a mess like this “Inline SEO System”. We’ve seen a lot of products on this but this was the best we’ve come across so far.
